Where possible you should always try to elicit the patient's other regular medications as well as any social drug use. This will give some indication of the patient's underlying medical history, but it also has relevance to the risk of complications from certain drugs in overdose.

For example, hepatic enzyme inducing drugs (e.g. alcohol and anticonvulsants) will increase, and oral contraceptives will decrease, the risk of paracetamol hepatotoxicity.
