Restraining Patients

Physical restraint is only appropriate for short periods of time. If used, a formal 5-point physical restraint should be applied in the supine position fro the minimum necessary time.

Sedation with benzodiazepines and/or droperidol is useful if the major problem is delirium or psychosis. Patients must then be observed closely and be intubated if necessary.

Paralysis and elective intubation is often the most efficient way to controlling an aggressive and uncooperative patient. This is most appropriate when active treatment (e.g. lavage or charcoal) requires protection of the airway.
