====== Bowel sounds ======

Increased bowel sounds (prior to [[:wikitox:3.2.2.2.3_activated_charcoal|charcoal]] administration) may suggest [[:wikitox:2.2.7.4.5_organophosphates|organophosphate poisoning]]. Decreased bowel sounds suggests [[:wikitox:2.1.11.4.1_anticholinergics|anticholinergic]] effects ([[:wikitox:2.1.11.9.2.1_tricyclic_antidepressants|TCAs]], [[:wikitox:3.4.2.3_carbamazepine|carbamazepine]] & [[:wikitox:2.1.11.9.3_antipsychotics|neuroleptics]])

===== BOWEL SOUNDS and ANTICHOLINERGICS =====

Bowel sounds will be reduced in all of these poisonings and a [[:wikitox:paralytic_ileus|paralytic ileus]] may develop.

===== BOWEL SOUNDS and HALLUCINATIONS =====

Absent bowel sounds occur with the [[:wikitox:2.1.11.4.1_anticholinergics|anticholinergic]] drugs.

===== BOWEL SOUNDS and HYPOTENSION =====

Decreased bowel sounds occur with [[:wikitox:2.1.6.1.1_calcium_channel_blockers|calcium channel blocking]] drugs and drugs with anticholinergic effects.

Increased bowel sounds (prior to GI decontamination) suggest organophosphates.

===== BOWEL SOUNDS and SEIZURES =====

Decreased bowel sounds suggest anticholinergic drugs (TCAs, neuroleptics, and [[:wikitox:2.1.11.4.2_antihistamines|antihistamines]]) have been ingested.

Increased bowel sounds, prior to [[:wikitox:gastrointestinal_decontamination|GI decontamination]] suggest organophosphates.
